This video is month number six of my affiliate marketing website case study where I’m starting from scratch in a brand new niche, building a website from zero and documenting every 30 days here on YouTube.

What’s the progress?

We’re going to look at my analytics data so you’ll understand the traffic and the impressions and all of that. We’re going to learn about my actual sales data, right? The actual profits, how many products we’re selling, etc.

First I’m excited to finally announce where I’m getting my copy from because it’s taken literally six months to solidify my process for finding the right writers.

I’ve tried done-for-you services, I’ve tried services from the place I bought the website, I’ve tried independent writers and it really took me going to the pro blogger job board to really find the best quality writers. And not only do I have one at this point, I have three writers who are awesome.

One of them has actually written their dissertation on the topic of my niche, so I’m finding absolute excellent top, top quality people who can write, write and write.

I’m paying 3 cents per word is the price we found had a lot of people say, no, that’s too cheap, but I did find a few people at that price point, so I’m excited for what I have found.

Now looking back, had I known when I started, what I know now, month one would have been choose the niche and buy the website, purchase a KGR keyword pack, and then go through this exact process of hiring directly from the problogger job board.

Now to kind of share the full process in detail, I have a blog post on my website. You’ll find that in the description below. The short version of it is number one, I paid to have my job pinned to the top. I think it costs about $140 for me to list this job on their job board. And then I had a big long application process.

They went through Google form and they filled out an application on the Google form and the people who I thought based on their applications who were qualified to possibly write, they all got a test job and this was upwards of a dozen people.

Then I read through their content and the people who had really good kind of like core writing style, I don’t expect them to be perfectly optimized. I didn’t expect greatness, but I’m looking for who just has a good style. It’s readable, it’s catchy, short, punchy sentences. So I’m really trying to kind of kick up my content for the next six months at this point in time.

The writing team is that integral part. So, although I’m six months in, I feel like I’m like just getting started at this point in time. And also there’s that, that old phrase from Steve jobs, right? You can only connect the dots looking behind you. It doesn’t make sense to connect them forward. So I’ve built multiple successful websites.I build multiple brands to $1 million and beyond.

I brought all of this skill to the table with me and it’s still been a big time process of trial and error. And I think it’s important for you if you’re building an affiliate website to honor that, that it is filled with trials. If it’s your first one, it’s going to have lots of trials.

Even if this is your third or fourth website, there’s still going to be challenges. I guarantee you if I do this again, I’ll be a lot faster out of the Gates this time. But the process is still the process and I don’t care how much experience you bring to the table, whether it’s zero or you’ve been doing this for 10 years, I’m really trial and error is still the greatest teacher there.

Affiliate marketing works, but it isn’t passive income

  1. Hey Miles,

I really searched for your video from "Month 5", and I couldn't find it anywhere on your channel and your site.

Can you please send me the direct link of the video, I'd really appreciate that!

And by the way, thank you for the great content and case study you put for us, I appreciate man :=)

  2. Great video! Needed to hear this and great tips. I got a KGR package last year, and have hired at least 40 writers on upwork over a few years and only 2 showed any talent. I also picked up a great writer on Problogger 2 yrs ago, not the cheapest which brings me to a comment (don't take offence). Not all of us can afford a team like you, i'd love to ask what you're spending per month (3 writers would be costing you $$$$$ especially at 13 posts a week). Conversely, if we ''could'' afford it, we wouldn't know how to structure the team like you. So this is gold, we're learning from your journey and avoiding costly mistakes. Thankyou for your continued content.

  3. The number one reason why a lot of marketers can't find good writers is because they are not willing to pay for a quality writer. For example, you want a writer to write a 2,000 word article, at $0.03 per word, which is $60. You expect this page to be well written to appeal to readers and you want it optimized so it ranks well. Over time, you expect to earn thousands and thousands of dollars from the content. That's a tall order for $60. Most quality writers will not write for $0.03 per word. You get what you pay for. Most marketers are penny wise and pound foolish when it comes to hiring writers. Save yourself a lot of headaches; don't pay third world wages and expect top quality work.

  4. Thanks, Miles for the progress video I was watching the previous ones and it's amazing what the power of long term plan that you execute, I'm actually investing now on a new VA a lot of time and only now after 45 days I start to see the fruits of my hard-working training her!

  5. Hey Miles! Great video as always! Content marketing is powerful if you have patience and ability to come with a great content while giving a good user experience to your visitors.

By the way, I have a question related to Facebook ads. How do you deal with your Facebook ads campaigns during this time period of the year where advertising becomes expensive and can become hard to still generate leads and sales within your KPIs? This is actually something I'm experiencing at the moment.

  6. This is awesome!! Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge and reflections. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on video vs blogging content for niche affiliate sites? Was there a reason you chose blogging rather than YouTube strategy?

  7. As always – Great stuff! I'd love to take a look at the analytics myself and make a prediction chart on the monthly earnings for months 9-12. ( I nerd out on numbers and trends – I'm kind of a card counter for sales and corporate growth) I LOVE this shit!

  8. I am around 6 months in and I am seeing almost identical results, great to see the REAL process being shown. Enough with these make money quick schemes, it just does not work like that. I wish you the best of luck

  9. I love your videos, I have just watched from month 1 till now. I am on month four, my first time with SEO but going by your videos I think I am on the right track. Thanks again 👍

  10. Great information Miles! thanks for sharing! I just heard a story from speaker Leslie Brown about the Bamboo tree, not sure if you are familiar, but takes 5 years or caring fertilizing and watering the bush and after 5 years within 6 months the tree grows up to a 100 feet tall. The questions is, did the tree grew in 5 years or 6 months? beautiful analogy. I get all my traffic through PPC in pinterest but after watching your videos i'm convinced I need to switch to organic. Your videos work and i'm learning a lot though them. I'm very grateful and look forward to share what i learned when I make it work for me!!!

  11. Hi Miles!
Love the work you are doing. I am watching every video you post and I really like this case study. I have a question about this project.
Are you also building an email list with this blog website or not? I'm building a blog focused website myself, but I have my own products. I am giving away all the knowledge for free, except one part where I ask an email in return. I don't know if this is a good idea and if I should be worrying about creating an email list at this stage. Should I just make everything available and get more traffic? What's your thought on this? Appreciate your answer! All the best.

  12. The thing is, as a successful business operator, you're comfortable with investing $50k in this project over a year and maybe not getting a great return. It's a roll of the dice and dependent on Google and Amazon. That's ok for someone in your position but for someone wanting to quit their day job and with minimal resources it may not be the best approach to building online income.

  13. Always an awesome video! Love watching the progress! It took me 3 months to get my first sale. But man did it feel good! I actually made 14 sales in 2 days because of guest posting. Sweet! Been following your lead Miles!

  14. Hi Miles. With Google's increased focus on EAT, are you publishing all of these blog post under your own name or the individual author's names? And if the latter, do you have an about page for each author?

  15. Nice work man! Always exciting to see good growth and things start working.

It took me ages to find good writers. My team is pretty solid now, it did take me a while to train them up. I have a team of writers, researchers and VAs that do all the formatting and onpage seo.

Im now looking at a hiring project manager to take care of those teams which will hopefully free me up from email a bit.

Are you using anything like BaseCamp, trello or teamwork to manage teams and projects? BaseCamp is awesome – best I’ve found so far.

  16. Side gig, to my side gig, to my side gig, to my side gig!!

This vid rocked!! Compounding clicked in a different way!

It's tough in the starts and your "I know it's going to work" is crazy inspiring!!

    Thanks for showing the way!!!

  17. Nice video! Awesome to get REAL WORLD experiences so that people can get a realistic idea of what it takes, too many people on YT blowing smoke. It will be fun to see where the "break even" point comes. I'm guessing 2 years 2 months……….

  18. Thanks for the really great video as always. Where do you buy your KGR packages? Looks like there are a bunch of options in Google and not sure which ones are legit.
