How to Record & Edit Videos With Camtasia

In this video, I show you how you can start using Camtasia to record and edit your videos. I made a Screencast-O-Matic video in the past (you can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtQCRXKXJZ0) so you can take a look and compare the two. But as mentioned, Camtasia is a more professional tool that you would use for your more special videos. Screencast-O-Matic is more beginner-friendly but lacks many features Camtasia offers, at the very least the Green Screen effect capability.

That being said, it’s very easy to get started. First you will need to sign up and create an account with TechSmith Snagit. You will then need to download Camtasia. This is a much more expensive tool than Screencast-O-Matic, but it will provide you with many more options for your videos.

When you first start, you will start on a blank Camtasia interface where you can add or record videos. Since we are assuming that you don’t have anything started right now, you would need to click on “Record” in the top-left corner of Camtasia and the recording screen will pull up.

The recording is pretty straight-forward as you go from left to right. The first option is the dimensions of your recording. Do you want to record the full screen or just a part of it?

Depending on what you want to do, just enter the dimensions you want to record. You can also drag and drop the dimensions by manually adjusting the size of the recording window. If you want to go back to the full screen, just click the little arrow to the right of the recording and select the full-screen option at the top.

Next, you would select the camera/webcam that you want to use to record yourself. You are able to see what you look like before you start the recording here, so make sure everything is exactly as you want it to be, since you won’t be able to adjust it again until after the end of the video.

Lastly, you can choose your mic and the computer sounds settings. When you configure all these options, click on “Rec” and you’ll begin the recording.

When you’re done with the recording, you can either click the little circle arrow to delete and start over the recording, click pause to resume at a later time, or click “Stop” to save the recording. This is what we’ll do here.

Once you click stop, this new video will automatically show up in your Camtasia interface/library and you can start the edits.

You can keep recording videos here and adding new content and just drag and drop them from the media folder down to the editing field.

We will briefly go over a few editing options, but once you are happy with what you have up, just click “Share” and “Local File”. Select the folder, format and quality of your file and hit save.

In regards to editing, there is a lot that can be shown and that’s why courses on Camtasia exist – however I will try to briefly go over all the tools you have available at your disposal when editing with Camtasia so you can get an idea of what they are.

At the top after “Media”, you have the “Library” where you can upload images and add them to your video.

Next you have “Favorites”, where you can access your saved features for quick access later on.

“Annotations” gives you a little box, either with words or without for you to use in your video. I like to use this whenever I misspeak in my videos to clarify things up.

“Transitions” allows you to add a transition to your video clips, such as “Fade” effect you might see in some of my videos at the very beginning.

“Behaviors” is similar to transitions, but it applies to the entire clip, not just a portion of it.

“Animations” allows you to zoom in and out of a specific part. This is especially useful if you are typing something very important in and want to show the audience, but the text is very small.

“Cursor Effects” adds an on-click effect to your cursor, especially useful if you are going over a large recording area.
