My Camtasia tutorial video: https://youtu.be/m4aFGKcdvMo

Hey all!

In this video, I show you how you can start using Screencast-O-Matic to record and edit your videos. This is an amazing tool that you can use if you are just starting out recording videos and want to see if this is even right for you or not. This is because Screencast-O-Matic offers a free pricing plan that can allow you to test the waters and determine if it’s right for you before you move on to more sophisticated recording and editing software like Camtasia.

That being said, it’s very easy to get started. First you will need to sign up and create an account at Screencast-O-Matic. You will need to download the screen recording software as well.

When you done with that, click on “Start Recorder” and the main recording interface will open.

There are quite a few options here and I go through all of them in a fair amount of detail.

When you are ready to record, click the “Rec” red button and after a 3 second countdown, the screen will begin recording.

However you don’t only have to record your screen. You can record only yourself, your screen, but also yourself AND the screen.

In my videos, I also use the latter option, which is why you can see my face as well as my screen.

You can adjust the dimensions of the screen you want to record. You can make it fit for entire size of the screen, or just a portion, depending on what you want to show and record. In my videos, I always record the entire computer screen, and that’s probably the most popular option you see anywhere.

Make sure your audio is identified and the little green bars are flashing when you are speaking – that means your mic is working and people will hear you when you show them the recording.

Let’s assume you start the recording and then click done. You have the option of immediately sharing the video with others, editing it, or saving it as a file.

I will usually edit the video even if I think it’s perfect already, just to make sure I have all the pieces I need in place and just go through it one additional time to keep an eye on any possible mistakes.

There are many tools you can use when editing videos in Screencast-O-Matic, but the ones I mainly use are blur and cut. You can go through all the other options as you see fit, but using any of these tools is pretty simple and straightforward.

Once you add some tools to a specific time frame, if you hover over it, you will see all the tools that were used.

In the video, I used an arrow and a blur effect, so you could see both these elements when hovering over that specific time range in the video.

Once you are done with all the elements you wanted to add, simply click “Done” and publish the video. You can save it as a video file or upload it to Screencast-O-Matic. For my YouTube videos, I used to save the recording as a file and then just upload it into YouTube. However if you are unsure whether you want to do more edits in the future or not, you can just save it to Screencast-O-Matic, and then re-open it whenever you are ready and make the edits. THEN you can save it as a file and upload it whenever you need to.

That is pretty much for the basics of Screencast-O-Matic video recording. If you followed my YouTube channel since the beginning, you know that I started by using OBS, then Screencast-O-Matic, and now using Camtasia.

As my channel is growing, so is my need to do more complicated editing, and so I have moved over to Camtasia because it allows me to do just that. However Camtasia is very expensive, but let me know if you would like me to make some videos on it and I can definitely teach you how to create and edit videos there to.

  1. I see alot of videos that lose me & do not explain hardly anything..I've been struggling to use my screen castomatic software to make utube videos BUT you ( even though youhad a brisk speed) u went over things more than once..I put u in the top 1 percentile as being a teacher & very concerned with your audience because you are so thorough..FOR THAT I AM VERY THANKFUL!…Keep up the good work..I'm saving this video link to go overit again..thank you again Ivan….Jerry D

  2. loved this so helpful Ivan thank you. Once question how do you show up in bottom with what seems the background of the browser you had opened as opposed to whatever was really behind you?

  3. You need to differentiate between the free and the paid for features. I am finding it very difficult to get information on editing via the free version.

  4. Thanks, I’m going to try out the paid version if they offer a few days’ free trial. Do you know if it can caption in different languages? I saw “English” but I saw in the video there was a drop down menu and was wondering what the other options are. Thanks so much for the tutorial!

  5. how do u screencast the free version? i need to make a video for a college class i don’t know how to record a video and send the link on to the canvas where all my homework assignments are posted so please respond soon thanks

  6. Hi. I just discovered your channel. I heard about the Screencast-O-matic and wanted to know how it worked. I watched several videos here on YouTube and I have to say I found yours to be the best. You explained everything in detail and made it easy for someone like me who is not tech savvy to understand what you were doing. Not only did I hit the like button, but I also subscribed. One thing that I haven't learned from any of the videos is if you upload them to Screencast-O-matic because you have opened an account, are your videos private still or are they able to see them ?

  7. i updated to premiere and i had some videos pending for upload. Now that i've updated i can't find my old videos. The site said look in V1 and transfer to V2. I don't know how or are my old recordings lost? please help!!

  8. Someone else mentioned this but it would be great if you did a video on how to do this talking head with the screen as the background. Would love to know the specific and how to set up a green screen. thx
