If you are like me and curious as to what you can make doing different types of jobs, especially in the creative field, I break down how much I’ve made at each of my 10 jobs. From washing dishes and delivering pizzas, to working at recording studios and production companies, I hope this video gives you some insight into what can be made at different levels of your career.

I don’t have a four-year college degree – just an associates degree in recording arts, so I never thought I’d be able to work my way up in a different industry and make a decent living.

  1. This might be something I should already understand. But could you go more in depth about the whole paying yourself, and putting the rest in your business account?

  2. You're a really good storyteller. Great voice. Video is a great fit for you. Ideally, I'm not sure what kind of videos you should be doing…but it seems like you have the horsepower to do some really epic storytelling. You could easily be like George Clooney and produce/direct a feature length movie and cast yourself in the lead role. I'm thinking you'd make a great Private Eye/Detective type character. Add lots of voice over. But not to explain the story instead of show it…but instead just have the voice over because you're good at it and that's entertaining.

There is this theory that the audience prefers to read a novel, not an instruction manual. Even if you have a recipe for a cake that you want to share with the world…write a novel about it, rather than an instructional manual. Novels have drama, comedy, characters, story, emotion, etc. Novels make you care. Novels help you learn. Instruction manuals are forgetable. Instruction manuals are what the youtube growth hacking gurus encourage you to make because it's searchable content and that's what the algorithm prefers. You're a guy who can do both. But you clearly have the natural flare of a novelist. It would be interesting to see you embrace this direction more.

  3. Great video Daniel! I would love to see a follow up video where maybe you talk (knowing what you know now) what you would do different today? Failures that taught you valuable lessons. Etc.

  4. Hey man I just wanted to thank you for your clear insight thus far. I'm from South Africa working the lower end of the retail industry here(which sucks btw) i'm thinking of taking up work in digital art as a side service with the hope of making a career out of it but I have no idea even where to begin so do you have any pointers for me, your knowledge would be deeply appreciated?

  5. Co-associate degree holder, up top!

I recently got smacked on the face for having finished "only an associate degree" and my soul was crushed. Glad to be hustling extra to prove em wrong.

  6. Thanks for another great, to the point video! Remembering working weddings as catering bus staff in high school, long day but not a bad paycheck for one day's work. I'd love to hear more about how you all started Mango Street from the small business perspective and decisions you made getting started.

  7. Totally reminds me of Peter Mckinnon, he came up the exact same way. Working for Best Buy and then worked for me for several years cutting his teeth as an editor at Ellusionist. And look at that baby boy now! But he did some absolutely stellar trailers at E, as well as photography. At any rate, love your presentation, you’re so likable. So surprised you haven’t done a video on crypto btw… Yet. So much easier than the E mini, or Forex.

  8. Hi Daniel, I was wondering how you became a motion graphics artist. How much experience did you have and what tools did your employers look for? I’m interested in becoming a video editor but don’t know what sorts of things to include in my portfolio. Any insight helps. Thanks!

  9. 1:32 The far more compelling (but untold) story remains how you went from Indiana to Hollywood and landed even a menial job at one of the most storied recording studios in the biz with only a 12-month degree … ?
